Hackers are claiming to have stolen two terabytes of medical records from the Brazilian Military Police in a breach that could expose officers and their families.
The attackers posted on a well-known underground forum, claiming they breached Maida.health, a Brazilian company that provides digital health solutions. They say the stolen data includes extremely sensitive information, such as health records, identification cards, and medical invoices for police officers and their family members. The records cover diagnostic services for specialists in cardiology, neurology, and gynecology, as well as administrative documents.
The Dangers of Leaked Health Data
Medical invoices and reports contain highly sensitive information that could lead to identity theft or medical fraud. Criminals could use the data to impersonate victims to get medical care or obtain prescription drugs.
This potential leak highlights a growing trend of attacks on the medical sector. Recently, over 1.2 million medical devices were found exposed on the internet due to misconfigurations, which could allow hackers to access sensitive patient data.
Third-Party Risks
The incident also shows the risks of using third-party service providers. According to researchers, a massive data leak affecting US citizens’ medical data, with 2.7 million patient profiles and 8.8 million appointment records, was linked to a marketing company called Gargle. In another forum, attackers claimed to have leaked data on 433,000 medical practitioners in the US, which researchers believe also came from a third-party service provider breach.
